Straighten Up! Give That Chinstrap a Game-Ready Look

🛠️ How to Straighten Curled Nylon Chinstraps on Riddell VSR4 or Speed Mini Helmets

Restore a Realistic Look to Your Mini Helmet Chinstrap

If you’ve received a mini helmet with a chinstrap that’s curled up like a prairie dog hiding in its hole—or one that just won’t lay flat—don’t worry. Whether it’s from storage, packaging, or age, curled nylon chinstraps are a common issue. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix with a little care and heat.

What You’ll Need:

  • 🔥 Heat Gun or Hair Dryer

  • 🧊 Flat Heat-Safe Surface (such as an old plastic cutting board)

  • 🧤 Patience and Caution

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Remove the Chinstrap
Gently lift the chinstrap from underneath the buckles. The plastic mounting pins will release from the holes in the helmet.

2. Disassemble the Chinstrap
Remove the buckles and the plastic pins from each strap. You’ll want just the nylon straps for this step.

3. Prepare for Heat
Lay the chinstrap flat on a heat-safe surface—we recommend a plastic cutting board. Be careful not to damage your workspace.

4. Apply Heat Carefully
Using a hair dryer or heat gun, slowly warm one strap at a time.
⚠️ Important: Do not overheat the nylon. Too much heat will warp or ruin the strap.

As the strap softens, gently press it flat. Hold it in position while it cools completely. This helps it retain its new, straight shape.

5. Repeat for All Straps
Once all four straps are flat and cooled, reassemble the chinstrap with the buckles and pins.

6. Reinstall on Your Helmet
Reattach the chinstrap to your mini helmet.
📝 Pro Tip for VSR4 Owners: Slide the buckle further down on the shortest strap. This helps keep the chinstrap elevated and prevents it from curling back down.

7. Done!
Your chinstrap should now look clean, realistic, and just like the ones on full-size helmets.

🧠 Pro Tips from Rocker T

  • Test Heat First: Start with the lowest setting on your dryer or heat gun.

  • Avoid Damage: Never use an open flame or direct contact with a heating element.

  • Use a Flat Cooling Surface: Don’t skip this—cooling in a flat position locks the shape.

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Try this first on a spare chinstrap if you have one.
